ABOUT US

The Isis Club Corporation is a 501(c)7 non-profit organization in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The ICC Board consists of sixteen governing members, whose purpose is to ensure the lasting nature of the Isis Club as one of diversity, excellence and leadership. The governing members of the ICC meet annually to review the corporation's financial status and vote on any changes to be made. Nine of the governing members serve as the ICC Board of Directors, working closely on a more regular basis with the undergraduates to ensure their positive experience and maintain the growth of fundraising efforts. The President, Treasurer and Secretary of the ICC, all members of the Board of Directors, oversee the financial and everyday business of the ICC and also work closely with the undergraduates to enrich their experience. Currently, some of these positions are held by undergraduates with the intent for all positions to be held by Isis alumnae within two years. As our graduate network grows, we are striving to provide the Isis undergraduates with learned experience and expertise through graduate governance.

There are two classes of members of the Isis Club Corporation, Governing Members and Participating members. Governing Members are comprised only of the board of the corporation. These members have the right and duty to govern all functions of the corporation and guide its future operations, as well as nominate and elect Officers. Each governing member is entitled to one vote on each matter submitted to a vote of the governing members. All governing and participating members are entitled to one vote in electing new governing members, should a governing member’s term come to an end. The Participating Members are comprised of members who join the corporation by paying annual dues, and who do so to enjoy the services and benefits of the corporation. Participating members have no authorized powers to govern or assist in the operation of the corporation and may be alumnae of the Isis Club.

The Isis Club is comprised of undergraduates. Only undergraduate participating members are entitled to vote, by a majority of two-thirds, for new undergraduate participating members.

THE ISIS CLUB

MISSION STATEMENT

The Isis Club seeks to enrich the lives of its members by bringing together a diverse group of Harvard women for the purpose of building friendships and a strong system of support on campus and in the world beyond. Through its commitment to excellence and leadership, the club provides resources for the personal and professional development of its members, and strives to improve opportunities for women at Harvard.

WHAT IS THE ISIS CLUB?

The Isis Club is a female social club, with a diverse membership consisting of about sixty current undergraduates. Women may join the Isis Club beginning their sophomore year at Harvard. Isis members are extraordinarily talented, motivated women, and it is the drive, passion and spirit of our members that makes the Isis Club unique. Our members are varsity athletes, heads of student government, and influential leaders in activities on and off campus.

The Isis Club brings together multidimensional women from all walks of Harvard in an environment where they can grow, learn, and establish friendships for life. Most importantly, the Isis Club provides a constant network of support for its members – a network that is based on mutual respect, loyalty and love.

HISTORY

Since its founding in 2000, the Isis Club has sought to enrich the lives of its members by bringing together a diverse group of women at Harvard College and building a strong system of support between members on campus and alumnae throughout the world. Through its commitment to excellence and leadership, the club provides members with a vast network of local and global resources for their personal and professional growth. The governing board, the Isis Club Corporation (ICC), was established in 2007 an effort to secure the future and vitality of the club. The purpose of the ICC is to monitor, guide and provide for the undergraduate and graduate networks of the Isis Club. The ICC, run by Isis alumnae, will be responsible for the wellbeing of the Isis Endowment and will determine through which uses it will best serve the undergraduate members.

The Isis Club began in 2000 by a group of 25 women for the purpose of offering a safe environment and social circle for freshmen women to flourish and create lasting bonds. Before the existence of female social clubs on campus, women’s options for socializing were extremely limited compared to that of their male counterparts. From its very inception, the Isis Club represented a unique character and personality unlike any other club on campus, male or female. The club is composed of women from diverse background with different interests, who are all tied together by a spirit of compassion, fun, and drive. Referred to as the "Isis spark," it is a spirit that Isis reflects in all its endeavors.

Ever since the first group of punches were inducted in 2002 in the Bell Tower of Lowell, the Isis Club continues to fulfill its mission of providing and safe and social space for women. By offering special lunch and dinner get-togethers, annual trips, community service outreach, outings in Boston, and simple bonding time, the Isis Club provides its members with the opportunity to get the most out of their time at Harvard and to develop meaningful relationships with their peers.

WHAT DO MEMBERS GAIN?

The Isis Club is far more than a social outlet for its members. Isis is passionate about its members’ passions, and the club commits itself to activities across campus, promoting education, cultural development and philanthropy. Several club traditions, such as our bimonthly all-club lunches, have been maintained since our founding, but we are also constantly looking for opportunities to grow. In past years, the Isis Club has launched a book club, participated in charity events including Boston’s Walk for Hunger, and hosted distinguished and inspirational speakers, including Wall Street phenomenon Janet Hanson.

IN A LARGER CONTEXT

For more than a century, undergraduate men at Harvard have had the privilege of joining final clubs, organizations where they build lifelong friendships and find a refuge from the pressures of Harvard in a close-knit group within the larger campus community.

The bonds of male final clubs extend beyond the college years, with members becoming part of brotherhoods of alumni for life. The clubs are an integral part of Harvard’s history, boasting numerous, influential alumni including Oliver Wendell Holmes, Franklin D. Roosevelt and John F. Kennedy. The historic and majestic clubhouses are the hallmarks of these fraternal organizations, providing over 400 undergraduate men and countless more alumni places to congregate, network, and host events.

Since its founding in 2000, the Isis Club has been without a clubhouse. Isis members have always created their own sanctuary in dorm rooms, restaurants in Cambridge and Boston, or by renting space from men's final clubs. The Isis Club has grown and thrived over the years, and is now one of the most dynamic, influential presences on campus, but we continue to dream of a house to call our own. An Isis clubhouse will ensure our longevity and establish us permanently within the Harvard community.
